Historic day for Winnipeg hockey
by Brandt Corbin
June 24, 2011 will go down as another historic day in Winnipeg hockey History. This morning the team will announce veteran AHL coach Claude Noel, as the teams new head man behind the bench. As suggested last night, the new team name will be made official, and we have it on good authority that the name will be one familiar to Winnipeg hockey fans.
As suggested by Sportsnet’s Nick Kypreos , True North (teams ownership) was not going to name the team the Jets. Almost by popular demand from the fans, they had no choice but to call the team the Winnipeg Jets. But, it only makes sense, even ownership knows, the Winnipeg or Manitoba Falcons would be awkward name, that some fans would not come around to.
Tonight to cap things off, the team will hope to draft its next superstar. Now are they going to get another Dale Hawerchuk? Probably not, but they sure can hope for another Keith Tkachuk or Shane Doan type of player. Winnipeg also has the assets required (#7 pick overall & Zach Bogosian) to move into the top 3 if they wish.
The team today has a chance to have a clean slate. It does not matter what happened in the mid to late 80’s in Winnipeg, it doesn’t matter what happened in Atlanta in the past 10 years. It’s a start over that begins today.
